Documentary Photo Project: “Stories From My Staircase”, Barcelona by Julia Malinowska

The Covid-19 epidemic has changed our world, our social behaviour, our form of communication and our life.

The world stands still. The streets and districts are deserted, the world had became quiet and we had sank into the virtual world chaotically jumping from an online event to video chatting in search for a substitute of social life that we knew.

The world is changing and we are waiting. During this nightmare, when we all are together but separately, I started talking to people I have closest to me. Social distancing has brought us together, I have learned my neighbours names, dreams and doubts.

This is how this documentary photographic project came to life.

Stories From My Staircase, Barcelona Documentary Photographer

Simone is from Italy. He is a coffee lover and knows where to buy the tastiest Italian croissants in Barcelona. He is the second most positive person that I know. We've been trying to meet for a breakfast for a long time, but we were always too busy. Now we see each other more often: on the balcony, in the window, on the staircase.

Simone is an architect and sustenible life fan. During the lockdown he works from home, he says hhe works a more than usual. He bought ukeleleles a week ago.

Masaaki came from Japan. He's a biology researcher. Before the epidemic started he worked at a research institute in Barcelona.

During the epidemic of Covid-19 he coudn't continue working. He has a lot of free time now, sometimes he cooks for his roommates and does shopping.

Masaaki is a expert and a fan of craft beer, he knows all the best bars in Barcelona. Besides that he makes beautiful gadgets out of leather.

Lila is from France. She works in data analysis. During the lockdown she works remotely. Lila suffers from migraines, misses a lot the freedom and fresh air.

Everyday Simone catches the afternoon sun in his living room.

Julia and Juanfe

Juanfe is from Columbia. He has been living in Spain for 14 years. He is the most optimistic and positive person I know. He works in data analysis. He works remotely from home during the lockdown. His passion is music, he plays drums and bass guitar.

I'm Julia and I'm Polish. All my life I've dedicated to photography. It's my passion and a way of coping with reality. During state of alert I postponed some photoshoots, I lost others. While I stay at home I work on new photo projects, I learn programming (wish me luck) and updating my photo archive.

We met 11 years ago in Spain. You can say it was love at first sight. I have more latin temperament, Juan is calmer. Recently we have been dreaming of a new adventure, moving north. Now we daydream and we laugh a lot.

Together but alone, supporting each other and waiting for new word.
